Earthquake Aftermath
The earthquake in Pakistan 2005 was a major earthquake, which took place the 8th of October 2005, with the epicenter of Kashmir. The quake was measured at 7.6-7.8 on the Richter scale. About 80 000 people lost their lives.
Rescue work was hampered by the very hilly terrain (Kashmir traversals the Himalayas and Karakorum). Most roads were either destroyed or blocked by landslides and it took a very long time before help reached remote villages in the mountains – many of which were leveled with the ground.
After Pakistan appealed for help from the outside world for assistance in the rescue work the help was poured in initially from around the world but unfortunately, many countries have not fulfilled their promises of longer-terms relief efforts.
